Technology and Student Accounts

How do I access my TERPmail account?

Log in at TERPmail using the passphrase setup instructions sent to the email address listed on your TYS application. For more information, see Set Up UMD Accounts.


How do I forward email from TERPmail to my primary email address?

TERPmail uses Google’s platform. Follow Google’s standard forwarding process


Are my UID and Directory ID the same?

No. Your University Identification Number (UID) and Directory ID are not the same. For more details, see Set Up UMD Accounts and Technical Requirements


Where can I find my UID?

Your UID is included in your TYS admission confirmation email.


How do I set up my Directory ID and passphrase?

To set up your Directory ID, select “UID Number” from the drop-down and enter the UID provided in your admission email. 

Once your Directory ID is activated, you will be prompted to create a passphrase. To update or reset it later, see Change or Reset Your University of Maryland Directory Passphrase.


Can my parent/guardian access my TERPmail and Directory ID accounts?

No. Parents/guardians cannot access your TERPmail or ELMS/Canvas accounts. To grant access to academic or financial records, see Set Up UMD Accounts.


Is my TERPmail passphrase the same as my Directory ID passphrase?

Not necessarily. Your TERPmail passphrase and Directory ID passphrase may be different.


How do I set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

Visit the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) page to complete your setup. Choose an authentication method that directs to your personal device. 


How do I access ELMS-Canvas?

Log in at ELMS-Canvas using your Directory ID and passphrase.


How do I access Wi-Fi on campus?

To connect to Wi-Fi on campus, follow the Connect to Wifi instructions for “UMD Users.”


How do I access my first online class?

See Zoom and Course Login. If you cannot locate the Zoom information, email your instructor and copy tys@umd.edu


Do I need a textbook or laptop for my course?

Requirements vary by course. See Textbooks and Online Protocols and Laptops, Wireless Networks, and UMD Alerts


Billing and Payment

How much does TYS cost?

TYS costs vary according to program type. See Program Fees and Scholarships.


When will I be billed, and when is payment due?

Payment deadlines are based on your admission date. For the full schedule, see Payment Deadlines.


How do I pay my bill?

When will my TYS program deposit post?

For the deposit posting timeline, see Application Fee and Program Deposit.


What if my deposit has not posted before my payment is due?

Email tys@umd.edu and pay your balance minus the $275 deposit before the deadline. 


How do I receive a refund if I accidentally overpaid and/or canceled my enrollment?

Course Information and Attendance

How do I check my course times?

Visit TYS Courses, select the title of your course, and view the listed meeting times.


Where can I check my grades and get a copy of my transcript?

Grades and transcripts are available through UMD’s academic records services. See Final Course Grade and Transcript.


How can I contact my course instructor?

Instructors typically share their email in the course syllabus. You can also use the Directory Search to find your instructor’s contact information.


How can I see which course I’m enrolled in?

Your admission confirmation email includes your course enrollment information. If you requested a course change after being admitted, make sure you received written confirmation from TYS staff that we accepted and processed your request. Instructors typically share their email in the course syllabus. 


How do I change my course enrollment?

To request a course change, email tys@umd.edu with the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your University Identification Number (UID)
  • The course you want to enroll in

Course change requests are reviewed and accepted on a case-by-case basis.


What if I need to miss class?

TYS requires full attendance. For details, see the Attendance Policy.


Orientation and Important Dates

Is TYS Orientation mandatory?

Yes. If you cannot attend the live session, you must watch the recording to receive essential program information prior to check-in day. See Mandatory Virtual Orientation and Pre-Program Drop-In Q&A.


What time should I arrive for TYS check-in day, and do parents/guardians need to attend?

Check-in will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on July 13. You should arrive at least 45 minutes prior to the start of your class. Parents/guardians do not need to attend. For full details, see Check-in Day


Are there other important dates?

Yes. See Program Dates and Deadlines. Additional program events (details shared via email) include:

Campus:
