Program Overview
Clinical psychology researchers have made important advancements in developing psychosocial interventions for a range of disorders. However, these empirically supported interventions are often not available in community settings because providers may lack training in their use or the scientific background needed to make evidence-based decisions about assessment and treatment. Similarly, educators, policymakers, research support staff, and other mental health professionals may lack training in the latest research on the causes and treatment of clinical disorders, as well as the critical-thinking skills needed to evaluate the research literature. Clinical psychological science addresses these needs by emphasizing the role of science in understanding and treating clinical disorders.
The Master of Professional Studies in Clinical Psychological Science offers students an opportunity to begin or advance careers in the mental health field through broad training in psychological principles and intensive study of the science of clinical psychology. The program emphasizes contemporary theories of clinical disorders and empirically supported interventions, while providing rigorous academic training and mentorship. Students may complement their coursework with clinical or research experiences.
Offered through the Department of Psychology in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, the program is designed for working professionals who want to earn a University of Maryland degree while continuing to work full-time with minimal disruption to their personal and professional lives. Students with specific academic questions may contact Dr. Christina Danko at psycmasters@umd.edu.
