Current and incoming UMD students simply register for the courses during the registration period. Non-UMD (visiting) students must follow the application process first.
Directions
- Access TerpEngage-EXST Forms.
- Select My Forms.
- Select Start New Form.
- Open Select Form Type: From the drop-down menu, select Summer Undergraduate Visiting Student Application.
Guidelines and Assistance
- New applicants must create an account.
- Former students: Reactivate your Directory ID via the Former Student Identity Verification website. After reactivation, set a passphrase and log in to the TerpEngage-EXST Forms Portal.
- Note: Per University policy, a student’s email of record is set to a UMD TERPMail account. All University communication will be sent to this address including admission notices. For assistance accessing this account, contact the IT Services Desk.

Application Deadlines
- Application deadlines are strictly enforced. There are no exceptions.
- Undergraduate students who attended UMD in a previous Summer or Winter Session must submit a new application. Admission was only for that specific session and year.
- Students who require their institution’s permission to take a course at UMD must apply by the posted deadline even if the institution has not yet provided such permission.
Application Fee and Fee Waiver
- A $75 non-refundable application fee is required. Admission is for this specific session/year.
- Undergraduate students who attended UMD in a previous Summer or Winter Session are eligible to receive an application fee waiver. Use the EXST contact form. Include full name and a complete statement. Upon verification of attendance, a waiver code will be sent.
Processing Time and Notification
- Allow a minimum of three business days, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm., to process the application.
- An email acknowledging receipt is sent to the email provided on the application.
- Upon admission, registration instructions are sent to the email provided on the application. Check the spam folder.
Transcripts and Grades
- Transcripts are not required for the application.
- If the course has listed pre- or co-requisites or has a registration block, students may need to provide a copy of their transcript to the academic unit. To learn more, see Course Pre-Requisites and Permissions.
- Strong academic performance is essential for success in Summer Session courses. To ensure students are well-prepared, UMD requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale). If student's GPA falls below this minimum, they may still apply. To be considered for an exception, students must submit an unofficial transcript and a brief explanation of the earned GPA to summer@umd.edu.

Visiting Undergraduates Must Submit an Application If They:
- Attended in a previous Summer or Winter Session. The previous admission is no longer active and students must submit a new application.
- Currently attend a community college.
- Currently attend an accredited four-year institution as an undergraduate degree-seeking student.
- Completed an undergraduate degree and want to take a course for undergraduate credit.
- Earned a high school diploma and want to take a course for undergraduate credit.

- Tuition is charged at the per credit undergraduate rate based on residency. See Tuition and Fees.
Former UMD Undergraduate or Graduate Students: Only Want to Register for Undergraduate Courses
- Follow the instructions under Apply - Visiting Undergraduate Students.
- This category includes those who graduated from UMD and those who attended UMD as a degree-seeking student in a fall or spring semester.
- Former UMD undergraduate or graduate students are eligible for an application fee waiver if registering for undergraduate courses.
- Use the EXST contact form. Former students must include their full name and a brief statement that they understand that this application is for this session-only, will not carry over into the subsequent semester, and will not be used to graduate from UMD.
Former UMD Undergraduate Students: Want to Complete UMD Degree
- This category includes undergraduates who attended UMD as a degree-seeking student in a fall or spring semester and want to return to complete a degree.
- Must re-enroll via the Student Success Office.

- This category includes those who graduated from UMD and those who attended UMD as a degree-seeking graduate student in a fall or spring semester.

Current UMD Students
- Undergraduate and graduate students who are currently registered in the spring semester can simply register.
Incoming UMD Students
- Undergraduate students who have accepted their offer of fall admission can simply register.
- Spring-admitted freshmen who enroll in Freshmen Connection are eligible to register for summer courses but must first contact fc@umd.edu for instructions.
- Graduate students who have accepted their offer of fall admission must contact The Graduate School via email: gradschool@umd.edu.
- See D.C. Consortium of Universities Enrollment. Students using D.C. Consortium Enrollment do not submit the Summer Session application.
International Eligibility
- UMD does not issue documentation permitting study for credit for Summer Session.
- Visiting international students seeking credit are eligible to apply if:
- Currently attending a U.S. institution on an existing I-20, or
- Currently in the U.S. having possession of a valid visa permitting study at a four-year institution.
International Undergraduate Applicants
- Eligible international undergraduate applicants follow the instructions under Apply - Visiting Undergraduate Students.
- Application deadlines are strictly enforced.
International Undergraduate Applicants - Additional Requirements
- In addition to submitting the undergraduate application, international applicants must submit copies of the listed documents associated with their visa type to summer@umd.edu by the posted deadlines.
- Undergraduate Applicants with J-1 Visa:
- Passport
- I-94
- DS-2019
- Letter of support on official letterhead from the sponsor granting approval.
- Undergraduate Applicants with F-1 Visa:
- Passport
- I-94
- I-20
- Letter of approval on official letterhead from the home institution's international office granting approval AND acknowledging the dates for the session in which the student plans to register.
- Applications submitted by students with Visas other than an F1 or J1: Evaluated on an individual basis. If eligible, applicants will be notified regarding what documentation is required for application review.
International Graduate Applicants
Terp Young Scholars
- This 3-week summer credit pre-college program is open to rising grade 10 to graduating grade 12. Learn more! See Terp Young Scholars.
Concurrent Enrollment
- High school seniors are eligible to take up to seven college credits during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

University System of Maryland Graduate Students
- Are eligible for Inter-Institutional Enrollment through UMD’s Office of the Registrar.
University System of Maryland Undergraduate Students
- Are not eligible for Inter-Institutional Enrollment for Sumer Session.
- Follow the instructions under Apply - Visiting Undergraduate Students.

Tuition Remission
- This benefit is handled by the department human resources representative. See UHR:Tuition Remission.
