Deadlines
Deadlines are strictly enforced. All application materials must be received by the posted deadlines. There are no exceptions.
To register for any course, students must be admitted into the program. This includes former UMD students, those currently attending as non-degree seeking students, and former students whose accounts are no longer active.

General
- A $75 non-refundable application fee is required. UMD does not waive the application fee.
- Applicants must submit an application and official transcript(s) by the posted deadlines.
- Applicants must meet minimum admission criteria (GPA/Undergraduate Degree).
- Permanent residents and international applicants have additional requirements which must be received by the posted deadlines. See Apply - Permanent Residents and International Applicants.
- Post-Baccalaureate Programs are non-degree granting. Qualified applicants are admitted to UMD as non-degree seeking undergraduates.
GPA
Applicants must have the following minimum grade point average (GPA) based on a 4.0 scale.
- SIE: 2.5 GPA
- HESPIE: 2.0 GPA
Undergraduate Degree
Applicants must hold a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution.
Applicants who will earn a four-year baccalaureate degree prior to the start of a program’s fall or spring semester may apply but must provide the following:
- On official letterhead, a letter from the college dean confirming the date of graduation with a statement that all degree requirements will be fulfilled by that date. Send letter as an attachment to: exst@umd.edu.
- Upon admission, an official transcript with the degree conferred date must be received by the first day of the semester. There are no exceptions. If not received, the admission term will be moved to the next eligible semester.
Transcripts
Applicants must submit original transcripts for all attended 2- and 4-year institutions. Applicants who graduated from UMD do not need to submit transcripts as these are part of the UMD student record.
Golden ID
Post-Baccalaureate Programs are self-support, such that tuition paid by an enrolled student directly supports the costs of instruction. The Golden Identification Program is not eligible for these programs.
Veterans
To determine eligibility, contact UMD’s Veterans Benefits via email: vabenefits@umd.edu.
Step 1: Submit Application
- Select My Forms.
- Select Create New Form.
- Open Select Form Type: From the drop-down menu, select the specific program application.
Guidelines and assistance:
- New applicants: Must create an account.
- Former students: Reactivate your Directory ID via the Former Student Identity Verification website. After reactivation, set a passphrase and log in to the TerpEngage-EXST Forms Portal.
- Applicants who previously created a TerpEngage account: Log in with your non-UMD identity account.
- Need assistance? Information is posted on TerpEngage website page.
Step 2: Submit Official Transcripts

Post-Baccalaureate Programs are non-degree granting. Qualified applicants are admitted to the University of Maryland (UMD) as non-degree seeking undergraduates. International applicants requiring immigration documents to study in the U.S. (F1 or J1 student visas) cannot apply.
Step 1: Submit Application

Step 3: Additional Documentation
Permanent residents and international applicants currently in the U.S. holding a valid visa that permits participation in these programs must submit additional documentation (A, B, and C) by the posted deadlines. Check with the State Department prior to submitting the application to determine whether or not the visa permits participation.
A: Documentation:
Make copies of the immigration documents showing the status and send to the address, above.
B: International Academic Credentials:
UMD requires applicants to submit a third-party academic evaluation for post-secondary/university credentials from one of the two evaluators listed below. Evaluations must be received by the application deadline.
Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).
- Start the evaluation process with ECE by visiting their Education Reports page.
- Requirements: course-by-course evaluation, original transcript(s) and a certified English translation of the transcript(s), grade point average calculation, upper-division course designation.
Josef Silny & Associates (JS&A)
- Start the evaluation process with JS&A by using their application for evaluation form.
- Requirements: course-by-course evaluation, original transcript(s) and a certified English translation of the transcript(s), grade point average calculation, upper-division course designation for students with more than 1 year of post-secondary/university education completed.
C: Evidence of English Proficiency:
Students who have been awarded a degree from the U.S., United Kingdom, Anglophone Africa, Anglophone Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and the Commonwealth Caribbean are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS. All others are required to send scores to UMD, using reporting code 5814.
Notification
- Students are notified via email after their application file is complete and reviewed.
- The file is complete when Steps 1 and 2 (and 3 for permanent residents and international applicants) have been received.
- Reminder notices regarding missing items are sent to the email address provided on the application form.
- It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all materials are sent and received by the posted deadlines. Check the spam folder.
Provisional Admission
- Qualified students receive provisional admission and must fulfill additional requirements to register. Blocks preventing registration are placed on the student account until requirements for full admission are fulfilled.
