Registration and Course Access

Registration Dates

Students who do not register a fall or spring semester must submit a Petition for Waiver of Continuous Registration. The deadline to submit the petition is tied to the last day of schedule adjustment for the fall or spring semester. See Academic and Financial Deadlines. If you fail to register or submit the waiver, your enrollment will be canceled. To re-enroll, you must re-apply and submit payment for the application fee.

Category Fall (16-week) Spring (16-week) Summer (I or II)
Registration Opens April 5 November 15 March 1
  • To register, students must be admitted into the Post-Baccalaureate Program. This includes former UMD students, those currently attending UMD as a non-degree seeking post-baccalaureate, and former program students whose account is no longer active.
  • Course pre-requisites are verified through the official transcript(s). If not met, students are administratively canceled.
  • Students may register for other UMD course(s) / section(s), beginning on the first day of classes and depending on seat availability.
  • Post-Baccalaureate Programs are self-support, such that tuition paid by an enrolled student directly supports the costs of instruction. The Golden Identification Program is not eligible for these programs.

Registration Blocks

Students may encounter a block which prevents registration. Below are the most common.

Overview

All registration-related actions have deadlines with academic and financial consequences. Associated refunds, if any, are dependent upon the timing of the action.

Cancellation of Registration

Student drops all courses prior to the first day of classes for a semester/term.

Schedule Adjustment Period

Schedule adjustment begins on the first day of the semester and ends depending on the individual semester/term. During schedule adjustment, students are able to drop (and add) courses, change course section, change credit level, or change grading option with no academic or financial penalty.

After Schedule Adjustment

Once schedule adjustment has ended, additional changes to registration require special permission. These actions include the following:

  • Single Course Drop With a ‘W’
  • Add Course or Change Section
  • Change Grade Option or Change Credit Level

Withdrawal

Students may drop all courses anytime between the first and last day of classes for a semester/term. This action constitutes a withdrawal and applies even if the student is registered for just one course.

Overview

ELMS-Canvas supports online learning at UMD. Most courses have some type of online content and ELMS offers access to the following:

  • Interactive Content: Discussion groups, live chats, and assessments.
  • TERPmail is required to access ELMS.

Accessing ELMS

Log in to ELMS to Access Online Content.

  • The course instructor must first load the online content into ELMS.
  • This may not occur earlier than 24-48 hours prior to the course start date. Some instructors may wait until the first day of class.
  • Only students who are registered and on the official class list can access the content.
  • Students who register late: It may take up to 24 hours for ELMS to give access.
