Before submitting the online application, applicants should review the individual program’s application process, admission requirements, deadlines, and transcript requirements. During the application process, applicants select location and format that provides the best fit for their personal and professional life.
College Park, MD (CP) Format
- Classes meet at the UMD College Park campus.
- Uses the semester academic calendar.
- Students admitted into the CP format may only enroll in courses/sections offered in this format, with the exception of course/sections offered in term IV (summer) through the DC format.
Washington, D.C. (DC) Format
- Classes meet at 1400 16th Street, NW, Washington D.C.
- Uses the term academic calendar.
- Students admitted into the DC location will be allowed to enroll in some courses/sections offered in the online format.
Online Format
- Classes meet 100% online.
- Uses the term academic calendar.
- Students admitted into the online format will be allowed to take some courses/sections offered in the DC location.
International Applicants
- International students requiring an I-20 or DC-2019 can only apply for the MS-Applied Economics, CP format (ECAM). Upon admission into the CP location (ECAM), international students are eligible for STEM-designated Optional Practical Training (OPT), which totals three years of OPT.

Students who successfully complete requirements for the graduate certificate may apply these credits towards the master’s if the student applies and is admitted.
- If applying within a five-year period of completion, students do not need to re-submit accompanying application materials or pay the application fee.
- Students who have submitted original transcripts for the graduate certificate should upload a Word Doc into the application that states that their official transcripts are on file.
These programs are self-support, such that tuition paid by an enrolled student directly supports the costs of instruction. The Golden Identification Program is not eligible.
