Program Overview

Graduate Programs in Applied Economics focuses on building enhanced analytical skills and decision-making proficiency. Organizations and agencies need program and policy analysts who are skilled in evidence-based quantitative methods, and who can apply economic research. These programs offer graduate-level quantitative skills and training in economic modeling for professionals who seek to gain a significant, valuable advantage for career advancement. The programs are offered through the Department of Economics in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

Graduate Programs in Applied Economics are offered as follows: in-person at College Park, MD (UMCP), in-person at Washington, D.C. (WDC), and 100% online. The curriculum is identical for all delivery options. Designed for working professionals, students can earn a University of Maryland degree while continuing to work full-time with minimal disruption to personal and professional life. Full-time or part-time study is welcomed. Students who successfully complete requirements for the Graduate Certificate may apply these credits towards the Master of Science if the student applies and is admitted.

Master of Science in Applied Economics, UMCP Format 

  • Provides training in economic reasoning, formulating and estimating economic models and forecasting, and utilizing quantitative methods to evaluate policy proposals and programs. In the UMCP format, in-person classes are held at the UMD College Park campus. In addition, this format uses the semester academic calendar. Learn more.

Master of Science in Applied Economics, WDC Format 

Master of Science in Applied Economics, Online Format

  • Provides training in economic reasoning, formulating and estimating economic models and forecasting, and utilizing quantitative methods to evaluate policy proposals and programs. All classes offered 100% online. In addition, this format uses the term academic calendar. Learn more.

Graduate Certificate in Economic Analysis, UMCP Format

  • Focuses on the role of econometric analysis in policy with particular focus on empirical skills, particularly data collection, manipulation, and management. In the UMCP format, in-person classes are held at the UMD College Park campus. In addition, this format uses the semester academic calendar. Learn more.
